CHCL Measles FAQ

  1. What is measles?

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can lead to severe complications, especially in young children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals.

  1. What are the symptoms of measles?

Symptoms typically appear 7–21 days after exposure and may include:

  • High fever
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)
  • White spots inside the mouth (Koplik spots)
  • A red, blotchy rash that starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body

If you develop these symptoms, call our clinic immediately and stay home to prevent spreading the virus.

  1. What should I do if I have a known exposure to measles?

If you believe you have been exposed to measles, isolate yourself immediately to prevent spreading the virus to others. Please call our clinic and wait for a provider to call you with further instructions.

  1. What should I do if I need a measles vaccine?

If you need the MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine, call our clinic. We will check our supply and let you know if we can administer the vaccine. The City of Lubbock Health Department is also providing the MMR vaccine. Visit https://mylubbock.us/vaccine for more information.

  1. What should I do if I need to be tested for measles due to exposure and symptoms?

If you have symptoms of measles (fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, or a rash) and have had a known exposure, isolate yourself immediately to prevent spreading the virus to others. Call our clinic and wait for a provider to contact you with the next steps to prevent potential spread.

  1. If I have already received the MMR vaccine, do I need another dose?

No, if you have received the recommended doses of the MMR vaccine, you are considered immune and do not need another dose. Individuals who are fully vaccinated with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine are unlikely to contract measles.

  1. What if I don’t know my vaccine status or need a copy of my vaccination record?

Check MyChartfor your immunization records. If you don’t have access, call our clinic for instructions on how to retrieve your records.
